Simi Valley Schools commits to providing an equitable, rigorous and engaging Dual Language Immersion program that meets the needs of all participating students. 

Vision

The Dual Language Academy at Arroyo Elementary School will empower students to become multilingual global citizens, to take them from here to anywhere. 

Program Goals

1. Bilingualism and biliteracy - All students will develop high levels of proficiency and fluency in English and Spanish

2. Academic excellence - All students will achieve high levels of academic excellence in all core content areas in both languages. 

3. Cross cultural competence and critical consciousness - All students will develop a positive appreciation towards world languages and cultures in a global society, promoting their involvement in global issues.

Studies show that the human brain is more open to language development earlier in life. Children have an easier time acquiring languages. Studies also show children who learn more than one language:

• Value their own and other cultures more;
• Perform better academically;
• Possess a stronger self-awareness;
• Develop greater awareness of global and social issues;
• Tend to respect differing perspectives; and
• Have greater career opportunities.

Generally, it takes children four to five years to master a second language. Along the way, they will progressively gain skills in reading, writing and speaking in their second language.
