Arroyo Elementary School: The Home of the Macaw!

Arroyo Elementary School is the Simi Valley Unified School District's first Dual Language Academy. Opened in the 2024-2025 school year, the Dual Language Academy's vision is to empower students to become multilingual global citizens, to take them from here to anywhere. 

In its first year, the Dual Language Academy launched with all Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten classes only. Each year that follows adds another grade level to the program until all of Arroyo's grade levels are Dual Language. For 2026-2027 school year, grades 2 and below will be Dual Language Immersion classes.

Dual Language Immersion (DLI), which is the basis for Arroyo's Dual Language Academy, is a well-established instructional approach for young students to learn their grade-level academic content while also becoming fluent in English and Spanish. A foundational principle of the program is the cross-cultural immersion for all students. With their families’ high-level of involvement, students share each other’s customs, traditions and values.

A dual language immersion program takes native English-speaking students and native Spanish-speaking students and teaches them in both languages. This is done through the close collaboration of bilingual teachers who cover all subjects together. Ultimately, students should achieve competency in both languages. Students already attending Arroyo Elementary School in grades 2 through 5 will continue on their current educational journey.
